My story
- A boy in Jamaica.

- A fifth-grade teacher.
- A story about two dogs and a frog.
- One standing ovation.
- One sentence that changed a life.
I was born and raised in Glendevon, a community in Montego Bay, Jamaica. My family was poor. There were times I went to school barefoot because we could not afford shoes. But poverty did not take away my imagination, or the gifts God had placed inside me.
In the fifth grade, my teacher, Mrs. Wilson, asked our class to write about how we spent the summer. I wrote about my two dogs, the frog one of them ate and got sick from, and how I tried to find a way to help my dog.
While she was correcting it, she stopped. “Mutti Lewis, stand up.” I was frightened. She asked if I had written it, and if she could read it to the class. When she finished, the whole class stood up and applauded. I put my head down on my desk and cried.
Then she said the words I have carried ever since.
Never stop writing, kid. Never stop writing.
One teacher saw something in a barefoot boy who didn’t yet see it in himself. I believe God used her to show me I had a gift. That is why I write for children, and why I believe we must never judge a child by what they have, or what they don’t have.
